5 Steps to Detox for Less Bloating, More Energy & Clearer Skin This Spring

In today's fast-paced world, our bodies can easily become overwhelmed with toxins from our environment, processed foods and everyday exposures. These toxins can wreak havoc on our digestive system, tank our energy, create issues with our hormones and even affect our skin. If you're feeling sluggish, bloated, or struggling with low energy, painful periods or skin issues, it’s likely time for a detox. There are different levels to detoxification, which we take our clients through on a much deeper, more comprehensive level to get results. But here are five simple steps to start the detox process for better gut health, energy, hormones and skin this spring!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Water is your body's best friend when it comes to detoxification. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps flush out toxins, aids digestion, and keeps your skin hydrated and glowing. Aim to drink at least 1/2 your body weight in oz of water a day, and consider adding things like lemon, natural salt, electrolytes and minerals to support the detox process. Herbal teas such as dandelion or green tea are also great options for supporting your body's natural detoxification processes. Also, make sure to avoid tap water at all costs.

Cleanse Your Colon With Fibre

Fiber is essential for healthy digestion and detoxification. It helps to keep things moving smoothly through your digestive system, preventing constipation and bloating. Incorporate plenty of fibre-rich foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, whole food carbohydrates and nuts. These foods not only provide essential nutrients but also help to sweep toxins out of your body. Aim to fill half of your plate with and vegetables at each meal and focus on eating a variety of colours for maximum detox benefits.

Cut Out Processed Foods

Processed foods are loaded with refined oils, sugars, and artificial additives that add to the toxic burden in your body. To support your body's detoxification process, start swapping processed foods for whole, nutrient-dense foods instead. Choose organic whenever possible to reduce toxin exposure and consider following the Dirty Dozen by the EWG to know which foods have the highest toxin load. Our clients begin to see big changes in their digestion, energy, hormones and skin when they start to over haul their diet and get the ultra-processed and inflammatory foods out!

Move Your Body

Exercise is not only great for your fitness, but also plays a crucial role in detoxification. When you exercise, toxins are being mobilized throughout the body via the gut and lymphatic system to be eliminated through the skin by sweating as well as through urine and stool.

Aim to incorporate at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise into your daily routine, whether it's brisk walking, lifting, yoga, or dancing. Additionally, activities like sauna sessions or hot yoga can further promote detoxification by inducing sweat and flushing out toxins from your body.

Support Your Liver

The liver is strongly connected to your gut health, energy levels, hormones and skin. When the liver is congested, you can develop symptoms throughout the body, but especially in these areas. Once again, there are different levels at which we can support our liver health. Foods rich in the detoxifying substance sulforaphane such as garlic, onions and broccoli are helpful, as well as teas like dandelion root and milk thistle. Another great way to support liver detoxification is through glutathione supplementation (you can find my favourite here!) Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant and a powerful supporter of liver health, making a big impact on digestion, energy, skin health and more.
