7 Reasons For Stubborn Weight That Just Won’t Budge

Weight loss is about SO much more than calories and exercise. There are likely missing factors you haven’t been aware of or are just not able to fully address without the help of an expert. Here are a few of the common reasons for stubborn weight we see in our practice.

You’re Not Getting Enough Nutrients or Calories

We see far too often that when women are trying to lose weight, they significantly lower their calories. But calories vary dramatically between foods and just lowering calories likely isn’t going to help you lose weight, but it will actually inhibit weight loss. You want to make sure you’re fuelling yourself well, from good, whole-food sources.

You’re Not Digesting and Absorbing Your Foods Properly

Do you have a healthy digestive system? Sometimes it’s difficult to tell, but some tell-tale signs your gut may need to work is if you regularly deal with bloating, pain, have incomplete bowel movements or only go once every day or so, have loose stools or heartburn. A healthy digestive system is absolutely essential for a healthy metabolism and weight loss.

You’re Not Eating Enough Fat and Protein

Lowering carbohydrates is usually necessary to a degree to lose weight - especially the refined/processed carbs! That’s because it helps lower inflammation and insulin, which then allows us to more easily burn fat. We also want to bump up the protein and healthy fats to boost our metabolism.

Your Hormones Are Imbalanced

There are multiple hormones we need to address for weight loss because they all work together. Insulin, which I mentioned above, is a fat-storage hormone, so if insulin is high it’s going to be impossible to lose weight. Additionally our thyroid and adrenal hormones play major roles in weight.

You’re Toxic

This is one people tend to skip over, but it’s very important. If your body is overwhelmed with toxins, this causes added stress and inflammation, which are two things you don’t want when hoping to lose weight.

Some common signs of toxicity can include:

  • Poor focus/brain fog

  • Low energy

  • Digestive issues like bloating or constipation

  • Moodiness

  • Hormonal concerns such as bad PMS or menopause symptoms

  • Headaches or body pain

  • Skin issues or acne

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Poor sleep

Working on your detox pathways and organs, such as the gut, liver, kidneys, skin and lymphatics is essential to any weight loss journey, especially if you’ve hit a plateau!

You’re Fasting Too Much (or not enough!)

There’s a sweet spot to fasting. For some, especially women, extreme fasting can be quite stressful on the body and it may inhibit weight loss. These people may need to practice more time-restricted eating while still making sure they’re getting enough calories. That can look like still eating breakfast a bit later and dinner a little earlier, without evening snacks. On the flip-side fasting more could be beneficial also. When done correctly, fasting can be a huge missing link for sustainable weight loss!

You’re Stressed Out of Your Mind

If you’re trying to lose weight while managing kids, a full-time job, doing chronic cardio or intense HIIT workouts, and hardly even having time to breathe… Oh and did I mention not sleeping through the night? Yeah, good luck losing weight that way! Working on some of the foundational factors like stress, moderate movement, working on your sleep and tuning up your diet and supplement routines can make all the difference for weight loss!
